Determination of cotinine in urine and wastewater by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass-spectrometric detection

Abstract

A technique of extraction and the subsequent quantitative determination of cotinine in urine and wastewater by high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass-spectrometric detection is presented. The method is characterized by low limit of detection, high efficiency and sensitivity. Optimal conditions for the extraction of cotinine from urine and wastewater are found. This technique allows the accurate estimation of the content of cotinine in urine of "active"/"passive" smokers and wastewater.
Key words: cotinine, high performance liquid chromatography, mass-spectrometry, wastewater, urine, solid phase extraction.
