Enzymatic lysis of living microbal cells: universal approach for cell lysis rate calculation in turbidimetric measurments

Abstract

Turbidimetric measurerment data for enzymatic lysis of various living bacteria cells are analyzed. A method for the correct recalculation of turbidimetric data (–ΔAt) into absolute values of living cells concentration change (–ΔCFU/Δt) is proposed. Dimensionless efficiency of cell lysis –(1/CFU0).ΔCFU/Δt for various bacteria cells is calculated to correctly compare the efficacy of different bacteriolytic factors on various bacterial cells.
Key words: bacteriolytic activity, turbidimetry, lysozyme, interleukin-2, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus plantarum.
