Determination of the surface composition in perovskite-like cuprates by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Abstract

Complex cuprates with anion-deficient perovskite-like (La0.85Sr0.15CuO2.5-d) and layered K2NiF4-like (La2-xSrxCuO4-d, x=0.15; 0.6; 1.0) crystal have been prepared by solid-state route. XRD analysis showed that single-phase samples were obtained. Surface composition of the samples was determined using XPS. It was found, that both cross-section of the photoionization and an average length of the photoelectron free path should be taken into account when calculating surface composition. The surface was shown to be enriched by Sr, regardless of the bulk composition of the samples.
