Biocatalytic transformation of benzaldehyde

Abstract

The aim of the present investigation was to study the possibilities of cell-free extracts of D.desulfuricans B-1388 to catalyze the reduction of aromatic aldehyde - benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol. Reaction was carried out in anaerobic conditions in tris-HCl buffer. It was shown that in the presence of molecular hydrogen and cell-free extracts of D.desulfovibrio benzaldehyde is transformed into corresponding benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid. When the hydrogen is changed by inert gas - argon, only benzoic acid is observed in reaction medium.
The influence of physico-chemical conditions on the product yield was investigated. It was found that maximum production of benzyl alcohol take place at 100% H2 in gaseous phase. It was found that optimal meanings are of 7.0 for pH and 250C for temperature. The highest alcohol production was observed at the lowermost ionic strength.
In all experiments there was bidirectional transformation of benzaldehyde so both hydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase catalyze this process.
