The Development of Phenomenological Model for Kinetics of Bacterial Adsorption to Low Energy Surfaces

Abstract

Mathematical model of kinetics of bacterial adsorption on polymeric materials with different levels of hydrophobicity was developed. The model describes the system: bacteria, liquid phase, and solid surface and has the number of cells attached to a surface in a fixed time interval as a main output parameter. The model is based on the decomposition of the driving forces of the adsorption process into two parts. The first part characterises the interaction based on hydrophobic properties of bacteria and polymers and is expressed in terms of interfacial tensions. The second part characterises all other types of interactions, which cannot be expressed in the same way.
