Activation barrier in electron transfer reactions: illusion or reality?

Abstract

Critical discussion of existing experimental evidence for excited-state electron transfer mechanisms is presented. Special attention is drawn to the fact that smaller value of reaction apparent rate constant relative to diffusion rate constant can be caused not only by the existence of substantial potential barrier (activation energy) but also by the formation of some intermediate. The model of correlated electron transfer and medium reorganization is proposed and discussed which describes kinetic features of electron transfer reactions more adequately than conventional approaches.
